Old Québec is synonymous with the historic center of the city of Québec. It is here that the founder, Samuel de Champlain built his Habitation in 1608. Its geography plays a dominant role. The low-lying area of Cap Diamant dominates the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Above Cap Diamant emerges the area known as ‘Haute-Ville’ at the foot of which is located ‘Basse-Ville’. These areas collectively make up what is known as the historic site of Old Québec. It is part of the territory of the city of Québec and is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
